Who would? Luffy knocked the shit out of his grandfather, the hero of the marines, without a gear and now 2 years later with gear second I doubt many would be seen as cool after taking a clean hit
Anyway, I slightly agree with the comparing between Gear 2 and the pills. Remember how Lucci pointed it out how it works as doping? Also it is more or less comparable to Zoro and his swords, as well, just like it is to Chopper and his rumble balls. Now, I know that Zoro and Chopper trained hard to master both tools but both are also weaker without them, not necessarily much weaker but still noticeable.
For those who've read Naruto just look at how drugs are used there but Oda has done a great job painting up a picture of Hodi as a thug junkie. Btw I wouldn't really underestimate his power remember he defeated the crew and severely damaged the boat with nothing but his teeth and jaw. Imo that's pretty good.
Though, I've got the impression that Luffy, Zoro and Sanji are above and beyond Hodi, Decken and Hyo. I mean just look at the effectiveness and calmness against the kraken. I'm guessing Oda will really twist it up to make it harder for the crew, as always.
